You remember our friends Samuel and Carolyn that we had over for dinner? Well, they invited us to their daughter's birthday party. What an honor!!
We drove and drove and drove over 4 x 4 trails to get to their house which was surrounded by African huts. We sat in plastic chairs out under the beautiful shade tree. And we celebrated Marissa's birthday with our Ugandan friends.
First the grandfather (or Moseh...not sure if that's spelled right!) welcomed us and shared a short speech about how special the day was. After that Samuel said a few things and prayed in Acholi for our time together. Then an uncle shared about how grateful he was that we all came to celebrate the special occasion. Then we prayed in English and sang Happy Birthday. After that Marissa cut her cake (which is apparently a big tradition in Ugandan culture) and we all got to eat some.
After that the women helped Carolyn get food put out on the table and we served up plates. Yummy beans and rice, cabbage, irish (which are potatoes), chapatis (which are like tortillas). oooooh....it was GOOD!!
What a FUN night it was! And, again, what an honor to be invited to share in this family celebration!!
